Tranmere Rovers vs. Rochdale (03/08/2019) Sky Bet League 1 Match Preview

Will Gilbert

Football is finally back this weekend, after nearly 10 weeks of brutal boredom on Saturdays, the beautiful game makes its return. Third tier action also makes its return to Prenton Park this weekend, after a 5 year absence from League 1, we are back!

Our first opponents of the new season are fellow North Western side, Rochdale. Dale survived relegation by the skin of their teeth last season and will be hoping to make a swift exit from any potential relegation dogfight. Former Rochdale midfielder, David Perkins, is expected to appear against his former side on Saturday, along with some new teammates.

David Perkins- Ex Rochdale and current Rovers midfielder.
The newcomers:

Micky Mellon has made 9 signings so far this summer to bolster his squad. Starting from the back we have signed Calum Woods from Bradford, George Ray from Crewe and Sid Nelson on a permanent deal, this coming after he was released by Millwall. Silky skilled winger, Kieron Morris, became MM’s second loan to permanent deal. Corey Blackett-Taylor and the technically gifted Darren Potter both arrived from Aston Villa and Rotherham respectively. Stefan Payne, Jordan Ponticelli and Morgan Ferrier have all joined the squad too.

Morgan Ferrier has joined the club from Walsall for an undisclosed fee.

The match is bound to be a back and forth, hard-fought encounter with both sides hoping to start their season off with a win. The task of victory has been made a hint tougher with the current injuries sustained by Jake Caprice, Ishmael Miller and Calum Woods. As well as Corey Blackett-Taylor’s knock- this might not see him miss out on Saturday however. PP is bound to be rocking on Saturday, with over 4000 season tickets to be scanned in on Saturday afternoon as well as other entries, the atmosphere will be electric.

Whatever the result, this Saturday should stand as a firm reminder of how far the club has come in the last 18 months. A little over a year ago the Whites were lining up in the National League, desperate for a return to the Football League. We are about to embark on an adventure in a division which is unalike to the league we departed some 5 years ago.

Last time Rovers met Dale was in March 2012, Rovers won 2-0 at Spotland. If you want to read more about our opponents this season then please check out my division summary:

We won’t win every game, we may struggle or encounter a run of defeats – whatever happens this season, ensure that you stay right behind the team. This season will be a challenge but Micky and the lads got us here and they’re going to keep us here! Stick behind the new lads and help boost their confidence. Tranmere are back.

Probable line ups:

Tranmere- Davies, Nelson, Ray, Monthe, Ridehalgh, Banks, Perkins, Potter, Morris, Jennings, Ferrier

Rochdale- Lillis, O’Connell, McNulty, Delaney, McLaughlin, Keohane, Camps, Ryan, Dooley, Henderson, Wilbraham

Score prediction:

Tranmere 1-1 Rochdale
